4 out of 5 stars
Something Secret, the sequel to Something Wicked, which I enjoyed, is less chaotic than it’s predecessor. This time round I read the family tree and cast of characters before starting the book and it really helped with my understanding of the family dynamics. The continuing tale is more cohesive and easier to follow. There is less physical action than in book one and more plot action which lifts the story and makes it flow better, making it more readable.
I love the spells that are cast by the Pogue witches, ‘Magic, essence, intertwine, breath of life too now combine.’ Beautiful. The author again uses descriptive language to paint a picture in the readers mind, conjuring the scenes (no pun intended) in vivid detail. One thing I like about these books is there is very little padding or extraneous text, it’s all action and pertinent to the plot.
After the ending of book one I was keen to find out the fate of Noah and Perry but that secret is held onto for a long time and there’s another cliffhanger ending. I’m not a fan of multiple cliffhangers so I hope this is the last one and the unanswered questions are addressed in a satisfying way in book three. Having said that I am really enjoying this story, the original plot and characters are refreshing, and the writing is getting better and better. This isn’t a series you can mindlessly read, it takes some thought and concentration to stay on top of the plot, but that said, it’s been worth the effort so far. Note I was gifted a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
